Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at our first meeting?

It is normal to feel a little nervous ahead of your first appointment. Be assured that Dr. Bell will provide a warm and inviting atmosphere for you to feel comfortable. The first meeting is a time for both you and Dr. Bell to determine whether she can be of assistance to you. You will complete consent forms and have the opportunity to talk both about your current concerns and about the types of approaches Dr. Bell provides. We will also have a chance to discuss the length of treatment, and what you are hoping to focus on in treatment. We will also discuss your goals for therapy and a plan for how to proceed.

What is a psychologist? What is the difference between a psychologist and a counselor/life coach/therapist and psychiatrist?

“Psychologist” is a term protected and regulated by the BC College of Psychologists. Psychologists are a regulated profession under the Health Professions Act. To become a registered psychologist in British Columbia, a Masters and Doctorate in psychology, 12-month a pre-doctoral residency, and period of supervision are required prior to registration. For more information see http://www.cpa.ca/public/whatisapsychologist/.

Terms like “registered clinical counsellor,” “therapist,” “life coach,” and “psychotherapist” are not regulated or protected. Psychiatrists are physicians (Medical Doctors) and are a regulated profession under the Health Professions Act and practicing psychiatrists belong to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Psychiatrists have an MD whereas psychologists have a PhD. Psychiatrists typically prescribe medication whereas psychologists typically provide therapeutic treatment and assessment.

What are Dr. Bell's fees?

The fee for a 50 minute therapy session is $225. These rates are in line with those determined annually by the BC Psychological Association and are on par with the rates of other psychologists in Vancouver. Payment can be made via credit card, cash, cheque or email transfer, and clients will be provided with an official receipt indicating Dr. Bell’s College registration number to submit for reimbursement through available extended health plans if applicable.

Are Dr. Bell's services covered by Extended Health Care Plans?

Coverage for psychological services provided by a registered psychologist is often available through extended health plans. Please check with your provider to find out the exact amount available to you and your family members. Although psychology services are not covered by BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP), they are tax deductible as a medical expense.
